The annual Royal McNab is a fun filled three day event that takes place in Lady Grey, usually during a weekend in June. Hunters from all over South Africa take part in this event.
The McNab starts on the Friday with a pub-lunch at the Mountain View Country Inn where the participants meet the organisers and other participants. After lunch the participants are given the opportunity to adjust their rifles and the rest of the afternoon is spent shooting guinea fowl.
During the steak dinner at the Country Club each hunter draws the name of a guide from a hat. Hunters and guides get to know each other and discuss the strategy of the hunt.
The great hunt starts on the Saturday morning at 06:00. To complete the McNab, the participant has to shoot a Mountain Reedbuck and Greywing Francolin and catch a Trout (in any order) within 12 hours.
The hunt ends at the Country Club at 18:00 where the horns are measured and the fish weighed to determine the winner. The game is placed on exhibit for all to view. Various prizes are handed out and the name of every hunter who completes the McNab is engraved on a wall plaque in the Country Club. A bonfire is lit and the hunters gather to talk about their hunting experience.
The Scottish evening with live music by the East London Caledonian Pipers is a highlight of the McNab. Most of the participants and guests wear kilts. During this event the "Ode of the Haggis" is heard and all are invited to enjoy this traditional Scottish dish with their main meal. The dance carries on until late at night.
Sunday starts with breakfast at the Mountain View Country Inn. A special service at the DR Church, with the East London Caledonian Pipers providing the music, ends the McNab. |
